Ingredients
  

Base Ingredients
  • 1 cup water Filtered water is recommended.
  • 2 packets Kool-Aid Flavor of your choice, typically Tropical Punch.
  • 2 cups granulated sugar Store brand is acceptable.
  • 1/2 cup light corn syrup Avoid dark corn syrup for color accuracy.
  • 2 teaspoons unflavoured gelatin Do not use flavored gelatin.
  • 1 teaspoon salt A pinch is sufficient.
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice Enhances flavor balance.
Optional
  • extra Kool-Aid or food color Use sparingly for dusting.

Method
 

Prepare the Mixture
  1. In a medium saucepan, combine the water, Kool-Aid, granulated sugar, corn syrup, and salt. Stir everything together, keeping the heat low to avoid any aggressive boiling.
Add the Gelatin
  1. Sprinkle the gelatin over the mixture and stir it in gently.
Heat It Up
  1. Turn the heat to medium, stirring continuously, until all the sugar and gelatin have dissolved—this should take about 5-7 minutes.
Add the Lemon Juice
  1. Once it’s all melted down and syrupy, give it a quick stir with the lemon juice and remove from heat.
Pour Into Molds
  1. Carefully pour your mixture into your preferred molds—don’t lick the spoon until you’re done.
Chill and Cut
  1. Let your licorice cool in the fridge for about 2-3 hours. Once set, cut them into strips.
Dust with Kool-Aid (Optional)
  1. If desired, sprinkle a bit of Kool-Aid powder over the cut strips for added zing.
